Expats, Culturally Confused, and Families Living Between Cultures
Home feels like everywhere… and nowhere all at once.
Common challenges
Living between cultures can be both a gift and a challenge. Many international families and Third Culture Kids find themselves caught in between—never fully belonging here or back “home.” For kids and teens, this can mean identity confusion, difficulty fitting in, or navigating racism and discrimination. For adults, it can bring added pressure of parenting in a culture that doesn’t always make sense, without the natural supports of extended family or familiar systems. Even the “normal” challenges—school stress, friendships, family dynamics—take on extra layers when filtered through a cultural lens. I speak from experience as an expat who has lived in Argentina, Brazil, and the U.S., which informs my understanding of these challenges.
Common therapy goals
Adjusting to new environments – Developing tools to navigate culture shock, transitions, and the stress of starting over.
Managing identity questions – Exploring how belonging, roots, and cultural identity shape who you are.
Balancing multiple cultures – Learning to integrate different values, traditions, and expectations without losing yourself.
Improving family communication – Strengthening relationships across cultures, languages, and generational perspectives.
Handling stress and anxiety – Building coping strategies to manage the uncertainty and pressures of international life.
Supporting transitions – Preparing for big moves like starting college abroad, returning “home,” or entering the workforce in a new place.
Finding community and connection – Overcoming isolation by creating supportive relationships and networks.
How I help kids and teens
Growing up between cultures can be confusing and isolating. I help teens and young adults name their experiences, build confidence, and strengthen relationships at home and school. We tackle common challenges—friendships, anxiety, academics—while considering how cultural context shapes their world. My approach is direct, warm, and grounded in both clinical expertise and lived experience, giving teens the tools and support they need to thrive.
Living in a new country or culture brings unique challenges. I help adults and families understand how cultural differences impact relationships, parenting, and personal growth. Whether you’re guiding a teen, managing family dynamics, or figuring out life as an expat, I provide practical strategies, support, and perspective to help you and your family flourish across borders.
